Navigation and Estimation Engineer

I work on the problem of knowing where you are when GPS is unavailable, degraded, or can't be trusted. In practice that means inertial navigation on MEMS-grade sensors, recursive Bayesian estimation — particle filters, Kalman filters and their nonlinear variants — and map matching against the Earth's own geophysical signatures: gravity anomaly, magnetic anomaly, and bathymetry.

I'm finishing a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Temple University on exactly that problem. Alongside it I build and maintain open-source navigation tooling in Rust and Python, publish through the Institute of Navigation, and teach graduate robotic navigation at WPI.

So 2024 is wrapping up with some changes for me. I’m staring a new position at Temple University with the Boni Lab as a Research Associate where I’ll be working on designing software that simulates malaria out breaks and models drug resistance. A little outside my wheelhouse as a robotics student to say, but the lab’s staff have more of a computer science and mathematics background despite being housed in the biology department.
